My Story
Many years ago, I donned the red suit for the very first time to fill a last minute need for the Christmas semi-formal at Drew University (my undergrad program) back in 1987. However, the person that served as my first Santa mentor was my late uncle, Frank Carfora, who was the quintessential Santa Claus at many a family Christmas Eve gatherings at his house. When he began to experience health issues later in life, I took on the role for him and thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to keep this time honored family tradition going. Subsequently, I also performed as Santa at Xavier High School for many years, establishing a special program called “Selfies with Santa,” by which students would snap a picture with me and make a contribution to the National Honor Society Christmas Drive. More often than not, the beneficiary was St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.
To mark my 50th birthday, my wife Nada gave me a great present – to be an attendee at the bi-annual convention of the International Brotherhood of Real Bearded Santas (IBRBS). Over 400 Santas and Mrs. Clauses gathered at the Denver convention in April 2018, and it served as a great learning experience for me. After the convention, I decided to grow the “real beard” and was subsequently hired by the Valley Railroad in Essex to work as one of many Santas on the North Pole Express during the 2018 Christmas season. Having the privilege of making thousands of children of all ages smile on the Essex Steam Train took the honor of portraying Santa Claus to a whole new level for me.
Since my first professional season as Santa in 2018, I have branched out to do corporate events, appearances for non-profits, as well as a variety of pro-bono work. I am a member of the Connecticut Society of Santas and stay in regular contact with members of this distinguished group in order to continue to grow and learn about my craft.
